Following her highly recognized show “FIRST WE TAKE MANHATTAN” at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin earlier this year Tracey Snelling compiles the fascinating follow up “THEN WE TAKE BERLIN” at krupic kersting, Cologne in April 2018. For her show at the gallery Snelling presents various forms of her signature small-scaled room and house sculptures influenced by her surroundings, the vibrant and obscure areas of Berlin, its diverse urbanity, culture and clubbing scene.

Snelling’s variation of “FIRST WE TAKE MANHATTAN”, which reflects her current life sphere in Berlin, is a space filling “house in house” installation (bedroom) that will serve as a display for the artist’s performances as well as granting apparently private insights into the loneliness of residential machines in Berlin and at Kottbusser Platz in specific. By the application of miniature objects, photographs, lights, sounds and videos in her architectures, Tracey Snelling generates the illusion of a place, its people and their experiences. Often, the use of cinematic images stands in for “real-life” as they play out behind windows in the buildings, sometimes creating a sense of mystery, other times stressing the mundane. She grants voyeuristic insights and creates an atmosphere where the audience participates in fictional secrets. Snelling merges different absorbed impressions with peculiarities of the digital world, popular culture, news or politics, creating mundane and odd spaces like “Kotti” a small scale mixed media copy of Berlin’s most controversial and drug flooded social hotspot (72 x 122 x 90 cm).

Tracey Snelling's works are included in major international institutional and private collections. Her large-scale installation “Woman on the Run” was originally commissioned by Selfridges, London during Frieze 2008, and has traveled several US museums since then. Recent installations have been commissioned for exhibitions at the ‚Negev Museum’ in Israel, the ‚Historisches Museum’ in Frankfurt/Main, Germany (Criminal City – a 10-year installation) and by Facebook for their San Francisco Menlo Park Offices. In 2016 Tracey Snelling has been awarded with a prestigious Joan-Mitchell-Foundation Grant.
